The Elizabeth Variety
Joe’s Great-Aunt
Elizabeth is credited with being the first to domesticate the wild highbush
blueberry. She spent over 20 years
developing crosses from the wild varieties to come up with new, better
varieties of blueberries. Although she
was always after the one that would be “a little bit better,” a variety known
for its superior flavor, sweetness and size was named after her and released
after her death in 1954. Joe &
Brenda have resurrected the last known field of the variety, which was planted
by Elizabeth herself, and with today’s more modern refrigeration and handling
equipment have begun to market a limited supply of these very special
blueberries. You can get yours by
scheduled pick-up here at our farm, and they can be pre-ordered to ensure
availability due to the limited supply.
